Gamcheon Culture Village (κ°μ²λ¬Ένλ§μ) is often called the "Machu Picchu of Busan" β a hillside neighborhood of pastel-painted houses, narrow alleyways, and open-air art installations that has transformed from a humble shantytown into one of Korea's most beloved cultural destinations.
History
Gamcheon was established in the 1950s by followers of the Taegukdo religious movement who settled on the hillside during the Korean War. The densely packed houses were built in a staircase pattern to maximize the steep terrain β a design that now gives the village its distinctive look.
In 2009, a government-funded art project transformed the village, inviting artists to paint murals and install sculptures throughout the alleyways. The project revitalized the community and turned Gamcheon into a must-visit destination.
What to See

Mural Alleyways
Hundreds of murals cover the walls throughout the village. Look for the famous fish mural, the staircase art, and the door installations that transform ordinary entrances into works of art.
